Big question
When the firm checking your advertising is owned by somebody with a position in what it checks, how do you audit the marking?
The position
Neutrality is a contract term, not a claim. Ask for separation of duties, equal access, data portability and an independent audit right at renewal, and treat any supplier who will not write those down as a supplier with a position.
Why it is live
Identity, verification and measurement companies keep being bought by parties with a commercial position in what they check, and no published test exists for what neutrality would look like afterwards. Publicis agreed to acquire LiveRamp in May 2026. Nielsen agreed to acquire DoubleVerify on 6 August 2026, expected to close by the end of 2026 subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, with the parties stating in the filing that the independence of both operating structures will be maintained. Both are pending and both buyers have promised independence in public.
The case for treating ownership as fatal
InferredThe buyer of a verification business has a commercial interest in what gets verified, and nobody outside can inspect whether the separation holds.
The case against
DocumentedBoth transactions were pending at the September 2026 cut-off, both buyers committed publicly to openness, and nothing has yet been shown to have changed in what is measured.
Where the weight sits
Unsettled, leaning toward caution. The incentive is documented and the harm is not, so neutrality is a thing to audit rather than a thing to assume.
What would change this
Either merged firm publishing an audited separation of duties, or a competition authority imposing conduct conditions on one of the two deals.
