Big question

When a machine picks the product, does paid retail media still buy visibility?

Reviewed 5 September 2026Recorded movements 0

The position

Keep buying the slot and fix the feed. No retailer and no assistant publishes ranking inputs, so nobody can tell you what a machine weights, and your product data is the only input you fully control.

Why it is live

A recommendation made by an assistant reads structured product data rather than a sponsored slot, so the thing that wins the shelf may stop being the thing you can buy. Google published an agentic commerce protocol for retailers in January 2026 and OpenAI shipped product discovery in ChatGPT in March 2026.

The case for media still buying visibility

DocumentedA sponsored placement is contractual and rendered, so it survives whatever ranks around it.

The case against

UnknowableNo company publishes its ranking inputs or assigns a weight to anything, and a visit that began in an answer arrives at a listing with nothing on it saying so, so you cannot see the effect either way.

Where the weight sits

Genuinely unsettled, and that is the verdict. The defensible reading is that feed quality is rising in value while paid placement holds its position, and anybody claiming to know the trade-off is guessing.

Evidence UnknowableAgreement Nobody has taken a position. Too new, or too dull, for anybody to have argued about itState Live. Being tracked, and moving

What would change this

One large retailer or assistant publishing whether sponsored placements are eligible inside machine-generated recommendations, and on what terms.
