Big question
Is search demand falling, or moving to places that publish no query data?
The position
The volume is moving rather than vanishing, and the size of the move is not established. Do not quote the 40 per cent. Read your own query mix for length and phrasing instead, because that is a first-party fact you own.
Why it is live
A flat query line means either flat demand or the same demand asked somewhere that publishes nothing. Reddit added AI answers in May 2026, and OpenAI and Google both shipped product discovery and merchant interfaces, so more asking now happens where no volume is published. The most quoted figure on the shift, that nearly 40 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds look for lunch on TikTok or Instagram, came from an internal study that was never published.
The case for it moving
Trade reportedAssistants and marketplaces added discovery and checkout during 2026, and panel work shows request length in an answer engine differs sharply from a classic query.
The case against knowing the size
ContestedEvery figure sizing the shift comes from a third-party panel or an unpublished internal study, and no answer system or social platform publishes volume.
Where the weight sits
The direction is well supported and no magnitude is defensible. Argue the direction, refuse the number, and say which you are doing.
What would change this
Publication of that internal study with its method, or query volume released through a court filing or a regulatory disclosure regime.
